Ingredient Highlights
Dark chocolate cake: Dutch-processed cocoa gives this cake the richest, deep chocolate flavor.
Vegan butter: This adds richness to the cake and helps create a smooth, creamy frosting. Use a vegan butter suitable for baking.
Almond milk: Helps bring the batter together and keeps the cake tender. Use the milk specified in the recipe.
Oreo cookies: These provide the signature cookies-and-cream flavor in the frosting and create the crumbly chocolate dirt scattered across the top. Check the packaging if you need to confirm that your cookies are vegan.
Powdered sugar: The foundation of a smooth, fluffy frosting. Sift it if it has any lumps.
Chocolate tombstone cookie: The finishing touch that turns an everyday chocolate sheet cake into a spooky little graveyard. Add your lettering or decorations before placing it on the cake.

How to Make Vegan Oreo Graveyard Cake
1. Make the chocolate cake batter
Prepare the cake batter according to the recipe card, mixing the ingredients until the batter is smooth and evenly combined. Avoid overmixing once the dry ingredients have been added, as this can affect the cake’s texture.
2. Bake the cake
Transfer the batter to your prepared cake pan and spread it evenly into the corners. Bake until the cake is set and a tester inserted into the center comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
Let the cake cool completely in the pan before adding the frosting. Even slightly warm cake can cause the frosting to soften or melt.
3. Prepare the Oreo frosting
Beat the vegan butter until smooth and creamy, then add the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. Fold in the Oreo cookie crumbs.
The finished frosting should be creamy and spreadable, with plenty of chocolate cookie flavor.
4. Frost the cake
Using a round piping tip, pipe large mounds of frosting over each slice. Or alternately, spread the Oreo frosting evenly over the cooled cake. It doesn’t need to be perfectly smooth; a few swirls and swoops give the surface a little texture for the cookie dirt to cling to.
5. Add the graveyard decorations
Add your chocolate tombstone cookie, pressing it gently into the frosting mounds so it stands upright. Crush additional Oreo cookies into fine crumbs and scatter them over the frosting to create the look of dark, freshly turned earth. For a more sophisticated look, I love to add fresh edible marigold flowers or flower petals to each grave.
Finish with any additional Halloween decorations, like sprinkles or vegan candy.
For the best presentation, add the tombstone and any delicate decorations close to serving time.

Dark Chocolate Vegan Oreo Graveyard Cake
Ingredients
Chocolate Cake
- 310g (2 ½ c) All Purpose Flour
- 80g (⅔ c) Dutch-processed Cocoa Powder sifted
- 1 tsp Baking Powder
- 1½ tsp Baking Soda
- ½ tsp Salt
- 480ml (2 c) Almond Milk
- 10g (2 tsp) Apple Cider Vinegar
- 200g (1 c) Vegan Granulated Sugar
- 110g (½ c) Brown Sugar
- 200ml (¾ c + 1 Tbs) Canola Oil
- 13g (1 Tbs) Vanilla Extract
Oreo Frosting
- 226g (1 c) Vegan Butter, room temp for 10 minutes block style
- 420g (3 ½ – 4 c) Powder Sugar sifted
- 75g (¾ c) Chocolate Oreo Sandwich Cookies (about 6) + 3 more cookies for the "dirt" pulsed in food processor
- 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
- 12 Chocolate Tombstone Cookies or Candies for decoration
Instructions
Chocolate Cake
- Preheat oven to 350℉ and line a 9×12 cake pan with a parchment paper sling and spray the pan.
- In a large mixing cup, whisk the almond milk and apple cider vinegar together. Set aside.
- In a medium bowl sift the flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- To the bowl of a stand mixer using the whisk attachment or a large mixing bowl, add the sugar, brown sugar, canola oil and vanilla extract and mix well.
- Next, in two alternating additions, add half of the flour mixture and then half of the almond milk mixture, mixing in between additions. Scrape the sides of the bowl to make sure everything is incorporated. Mix just until you reach a smooth batter, some small lumps are okay. Be careful not to overmix.
- Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan. Turn the pan half way thru baking to ensure a level cake. Bake for 26-32 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool in the pan for about 30 minutes. Remove from the pan using the parchment sling and allow cake to cool completely before decorating.
Oreo Frosting
- In the bowl of a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, beat vegan butter on med-high speed just until smooth and creamy.
- Switch speed to low and add sifted powder sugar ½ cup at a time. Once all of the powder sugar is incorporated, turn up the mixer to high and whip for 2-3 minutes.
- Add in the vanilla extract and continue to whip for 1 more minute on high.
- Scrape the sides of the bowl and make sure everything is fluffy and whipped together properly. Then, fold in the Oreo cookie crumbs. Wrap up the frosting and store in the fridge until ready to use.
Assembly
- Place the cake on a cake board or serving tray and slide the parchment paper out. Cut individual slices, if desired. For clean slices, freeze the cake for about 15 minutes before slicing. Wipe the knife between each cut for a clean slice. Pull out the prepared Oreo frosting and re-whip until light and fluffy. Using a pastry bag with a large round open tip, pipe 12 large mounds evenly over each cake slice. Press a tombstone cookie or Oreo cookie into each mound. Sprinkle with Oreo cookie crumbs for the "dirt". Add edible flowers or edible flower petals to each grave, if desired.
- Alternatively, you can spoon on the frosting in swirls over the top of the entire cake. Add any additional decorations like Halloween sprinkles, vegan candy or more Oreos.

Tips for Preparing Vegan Oreo Graveyard Cake
A few small details make decorating this cake easier:
- Cool the cake completely. Warm cake can melt the frosting and make the cookie crumbs sink into it.
- Keep the cookie dirt varied. A mixture of fine crumbs and slightly larger pieces creates a more natural-looking graveyard surface.
- Secure the tombstone. Press the bottom of the cookie gently into the frosting. Chill frosted cake first, when the frosting is firm, then add the tombstone cookie. If it needs extra support, use a little additional frosting around its base.
- For clean slices. Freeze the cake for about 15 minutes before slicing. Wipe the knife between each cut for a clean slice.

How to Store
At room temperature: Keep the cake covered in a cool place for up to one day.
In the refrigerator: Store leftover cake wrapped tightly or in an airtight container for up to 4–5 days. Let individual slices sit at room temperature briefly before serving for the best texture.
Freezing: The undecorated chocolate cake can generally be frozen, tightly wrapped, for up to 2–3 months. Thaw it before frosting and decorating. The finished cake may also be frozen, but leave off the decorations because they can soften, so add fresh cookie dirt and the tombstone cookies after thawing.

Serving Suggestions for Vegan Oreo Graveyard Cake
This graveyard cake makes a fun centerpiece for a Halloween dessert table. Serve it alongside other spooky treats, warm apple cider, or your favorite fall drink.
For a more elaborate graveyard scene, add a few extra cookie crumbs around the tombstone or arrange small Halloween decorations beside the cake. You can also personalize the tombstones with a name, date, or classic spooky inscription.
Cut the cake into small squares for parties or larger slices for a cozy Halloween dessert at home. Either way, the combination of dark chocolate cake, creamy Oreo frosting, and crunchy cookie crumbs makes this one worth coming back to.
